Gingerbread German Christmas Markets

The German Christmas Markets are famous worldwide- every city and town hosts a Christmas market, whether large or small and Germany is transformed into one giant Christmas market where you can buy Christmas gifts and treasures to your heart’s delight. The markets give the cities a holiday atmosphere for the month leading up to Christmas, leaving the cities feeling empty and lonely after a month of bright lights and the mixed smells of Gingerbread, chocolate, Gluhwein and grilled sausages.

The traditions of the Christmas markets date back to the middle ages and turn German towns and cities into festive fairy tale type scenes. Christmas markets are held during the four weeks of Advent and include booths and stalls set up in town centers around Germany, along with plenty of great Christmas decorations and entertainment. Huge Christmas trees are erected and the shops sell Christmas decorations, ornaments, wooden toys, nutcrackers, figurines, gifts, clothing, candles, foods, local arts and crafts and a lot more.

Bands and choral groups entertain shoppers with favorite Christmas carols and hymns. You can buy fresh gingerbread, or a whole gingerbread house, delight in the smells of mulled wine, spices and roasted chestnuts and almonds and sausages as well as a wide array of other foods and drinks.

Each German Christmas Market has its own personality but regardless of which one you go to you are sure to find plenty of Christmas treasures to bring home as well as be able to revel in the Christmas atmosphere that Germany offers.

So, if you have the opportunity to travel to one Germany’s Christmas markets, enjoy the experience and all the sights and sounds you will take in and especially the Gingerbread!

Costco Wonka Gingerbread Cottage Kits Available For $9.95

We were at Costco yesterday for our weekly trip and they have started setting out their Christmas and holiday items and we found a whole area of Gingerbread House kits from Wonka. Looks like these kits are pretty user and kid friendly and would be a lot of fun to put one together with your kids or if you are a teacher or teach bible class this would be a fun class project for young kids. If you are a Costco regular, you know to buy these kits now because they will sell out and you’ll need to wait till next year to find them again and at $9.95 – it is a deal as they come with pretty much all you need. Gingerbread Journeys

Came upon this really neat composition of Gingerbread and thought I would share it with my fellow GIngerbread fans!

Gingerbread, with its myriad forms, alluring aromas, and symbolic significance, has been a quintessential holiday treat for centuries. At this time of year Gingerbread men begin to run amok in the kitchen, sticky fingers stud gaily decorated gingerbread houses with edible decor, and pastry chefs produce imaginative confections to delight the eye and the palette. As a life-long Gingerbread enthusiast, I’ve munched on all manner of piquant and pungent cakes and cookies, from the delicate ginger wafers baked by descendants of the Moravian settlers in North Carolina to the dense pain d’épices of Dijon, France. Mug-O-Gingerbread

We were out and about this weekend and stopped at our local Barnes and Noble bookstore and were pleased to find these cute plush Gingerbead kids sitting in a Gingerbread mug ready to go home with you!  What a great gift idea. These would make a very nice gift for your office co-workers,  volunteers at your local hospital and church, and for yourself.  The Christmas holidays are fast approaching and these cuties will surely be snapped right up so remember to take some time out for yourself and perhaps enjoy a Gingerbread Latte right from one of these  Gingerbread mugs.

This is an amazing Gingerbread cookie in the image of Hello Kitty. The cute world-famous image of a friendly cat with its big white head, small eyes, and smaller body and bow in her hair by the Sanrio company from Japan is now a Gingerbread cookie. Seeing images like this one really opens our eyes and minds to thinking outside-the-box and realizing that Gingerbread can be anything we imagine.
